BMD Analysis of Amputee Data

Hypothesis

No data provided.

Summary

This study explores if the systemic diagnosis of osteoporosis for an amputee population is inappropriate and if a localised phenomenon of unloading osteopenia should be diagnosed. It was hypothesised that BMD loss in the amputee population would exhibit higher levels of diagnosis discordance than in the population of controls and that BMD loss would be more prominent in the amputated side. Confirmation of these hypotheses would indicate that a diagnosis of systemic osteoporosis is inappropriate in the amputee population and, rather, a localised phenomenon should be diagnosed. This would have important implications for future diagnosis, treatment strategies, and research into prosthetic loading for the amputee population.
